OBITUARY.

W. J. JONES. Early pioneering miners of the Coast /in the sixties are gradually passing away and amongst them we much re- ' gret to have to record the death at the Hospital of William John Jones, who died there yesterday afternoon at the advanced age of 83 years. He was of a very sterling type and was neverknown to do anything but what was strictly honorable and just, while he was a hard worker as long as he could do it. He attended every rush on the Coast and took the up and downs with the rest in a philosophical manner. During the last thirty years, however, lie had resided in the Ahaura district, where he followed the business of mining advocate. He was a native of Carnarvon, Wales, and had received a substantial bequest from homo only a few days before he died. His funeral will leave Mr. Neilon’s residence, Cobdon, at. 1.15 p.m. to-morrow for Holy Trinity Church and afterwards to the Groj month cemetery. DUNCAN BROWN. The death of Mr. Duncan Brown at the Hospital on Saturday afternoon, though not. unexpected, came as somewhat of a shock to his friends, of whom he had many, as he was very much re-* spectod as a straightforward, honest pioneer. Originally he had been brought up to the carpentering trade but had boon fascinated with the taste for the precious metal. He was engaged In mining at the Waimea, Knmara and also at Rcefton at one time and the other and met with varied success, l.afclv ho had followed (ho occupation of a carpenter. His funeral took place yesterday morning and was followed by a fairly large number of his friends.
