A FAIR HELD TO RAISE FUNDS. [I!Y TKLEGR.VPH —SPECIAL TO THE STAR.] (JimiSTCHIIRCII, This Day. The withdrawal of the extra capitation grant of 9d by the Education Department was referred to this afternoon at the opening of a fair organised by the East ChristchnrcJi School Committee with a view to making up tho deficiency in its income. Mr T. H. Davey, M.P., in opening the fair said that it would not bo expedient for him to enter into a disquisition on political matters that could I best, wait till he reached Wellington, where with the help of fellow membeis ho would do all ho could to get the grant restored. He read a telegram ho had sent to the Minister of Education stating the fair and asking whether, and suggesting that as the Government frequently subsidised public money raised for laudable objects, a subsidy should he given on the amount raised by the fajy. Mr Fowlds had replied, however, stating that it was impossible to comply with the request as there was no vote from which a subsidy could be paid. '
