riii' TELEGRAPH— I’IIESS ASSOCIATION.] FROZEN HARES." DUNEDIN, Oct 6. —At the Police Court Francis Joseph Sullivan was charged with being in possession of hares. On September 2&lh lourtecn cases of frozen hares were found stored at Burnside on defendant’s account by the Christchurch Meat Company. Mr Finch, counsel for the defence, produced the Gazette of 1901, by which it provides that within certain parts of the Otago Acclimatisation district hares should not come within the operation of the Act. Maniototo, where iho hares came from, was one of those districts. He submitted that hares killed at Maniototo could not be imported game, no matter where afterwards taken. Magistrate AViddowson reserved his decision till Monday. WESTPORT-STOCKTON COY. AYESTPORT, Oct 7.—The first two trucks of coal from the AVcstportStockton Company’s mine came to Westport to-day with flags flying. At several stations on the way residents took samples to test its good qualities. The coal is similar to that on (hoAYestport Coal Company’s leases, being really a continuat ion of that company’s scams. The AVestport-Stocktou Coy. have contracted to supply 500 tons in AA T ellington next week. AN OPPOSITIONIST.. ASHBURTON, This Day.—. Air \V. Ho roundly condemned the_ Goeminent’s land policy, declaring himself i straight-out freeholder. He objected to Ftate control of the liquor traffic, and while not a prohibitionist thought no license should he given .a further trial, voting to be as at present. He advocated a C"vil Service Board and was not in favour of compulsory religious teaching in State ...■A, ols. He condemned the Second Ballot Bill.
HOUSE BURNED DOWN. PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day.— An eight-roomed residence in Ferguson street west was totally destroyed by fire lasi night, owing to a candle in a, child’s loom catching the curtain. The lions; was owned by Hinlyc and occupied by Lomax. The "’house was insured for £4OO in the New Zealand office. The furniture insurance is believed to have run out. ,I’raCtically nothing was saved.
