WORKERS’ COMPENSATION.

In tho House of Representatives last night tho House proceeded with the consideration of the Workers Compensation Bill iu committee. At clause 17, sub-section 3, which had been altered by the Labour Bills Committee was restored to its original form to provide that any right of indemnity conferred by the Act slujll bo enforceable in the Supreme Court or some court of competent jurisdiction and not (save with consent of parties) in a court of arbitration. At clause 23 an amendment was inserted providing that an action for. recovery of compensation must be commenced within six months. At clause 41, new sub-section 2 A, inserted by tho Labour Bills Com : mittce, stating that when judgment has been recovered against an employer, by or on behalf of any person for compensation under this Act, such person shall not, he entitled to recover damages against employer iudepend ently of the Act was struck out. The Minister said ho would have the amendments inserted in another place, making it quite clear that a worker may elect under what law he elects to proceed. • Clause 45 was amended by the addition of a proviso limiting the act-’ ion for claims iu respect to death to a period of six months after death. ( On the motion of Mr Barclay, a 1 now clause was inserted providing that there shall be no abatement dr compensation, if the claimant is iiij-,. sured. , ' After a lengthy discussion upon the, first schedule, the Minister proposed 1 that the title “hazardous occupations’/’ should bo struck out and “special oc-~ cupatioii” substituted.
