OUR DUNEDIN TELEGRAMS.

[by telegraph—special to the ST An.] ... DUNEDIN, This Day. Mr Charles Henry Stables, who committed suicide by cutting his throat in his bathroom yesterday morning, was highly respected in cricket and social circles. He had been wicketkeeper for Carisbrook B. team for sohie seasons and formerly played as scrum half for Dunedin Football Club. Yesterday he had some trouble over two cases in which his name appeared as defendant to two claims on promisory notes. This appears to have preyed on his mind and it is believed to have been responsible for his rash act. At the inquest held this afternoon the deceased's brother said that his mind was distinctly upset yesterday. He had been sued for debt and the fact of it being reported upset him considerably. "Witness was satisfied that it was the publicity of the case that had turned his brother's head. Mr Stables was married some ten months ago to a Miss Napthali, one of the telephone exchange hands. A VOLUNTEER ROW. The charges of insubordination against four non-commissioned officers in connection with the meeting of protest of the North Dunedin Rifles held on account of the refusal of the Defence Department to accept Mr Eenfoll's appointment as lieutenant of that company were dismissed to-day by the officer, commanding the district. The charges were that they had put forward a resolution reflecting on the action of a superior officer. The charges were dismissed oh the ground of participation of officers commanding the company (Lieut. Begg) in proceedings resulting in a serious breach of discipline on the part of these non-commis-sioned officers. Lieut. Begg is to be tried before a special court of inquiry (Mayor Strong, Captain Ross and Lieut McKehzie) and the evidence will be forwarded to Wellington. OBITUARY. The death occurred at Tapanui yesterday of Alexander Ross, a farmer, aged 82 years. Deceased was formerly a resident of Shag Valley. Mr Malcolm Ross, journalist of Wellington, is a son of deceased.
