MR ATHEY’S BENEFIT.

The public of Greymouth are always to the fore in matters affecting anyone who is a sufferer by either malady or misfortune aiid an appeal to their pockets for aid to a sufferer such as Mr F. Athoy has been for some considerable time is generally received favourably. This was the case in the benefit social and dance tendered on his behalf last night in the Town Hall when a large asemblago met and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The floor was good and the music was gratuitously supplied by Air Porotti’s orchestra consisting of Mr Perotti (piano), Clousen (piccolo) and Donaldson (cornet) who as usual gave the greatest pleasure to the dancers their up-to-date tunes being played in the most perfect time. Songs were given in the intervals by Messrs J. Berti, S. Croft, A. King and his young son of four years of age gave an excellent song for one so young which showed that the mantle of his father and mother’s talents appears to have fallen on him. Mr Rothman, a visitor to Greymouth, who is possessed of such phenomenial powers that he is capable of playing correctly on four instruments at a time also gave an exhibition of his powers. Among the lady vocolists were Miss Brimble, Miss Clarke, Miss Gobbon and Master Clarke also contributed a selection with his sister. The ladies provided excellent refreshments at the supper adjournmnt and tho company did not break up till an early hour this morning. All the returns are not in but it is thought that the net proceeds will amount to over £3O which may be considered very satisfactory.
