i While inspecting la building, the [ city health authorities came across a j deplorable case in a delapidated building. Two old women, aged 76 and 80 > respectively, were found in a • half-de-mented condition, covered with filth. The place in which they lived was in a deplorable condition. The women fought desperately against .their removal. Steps are being taken to have the building destroyed. At a meeting of the Parnell Borough Council comment was made on the measures taken by the health department in connection with the recent case of suspicious illness. It was stated that Miss McMillan, one of the victims, was in a very weak state of . health, and had only recently returned from the Cambridge sanatorium. Her relatives are of opinion that'she died from fright on being placed in an ambulance. Several Councillors were of opinion that it was a matter that should be enquired into and consideration was deferred till a future meeting. A private cable states that there is a very serious strike in Frisco, business generally being at a standstill, especially so as regards shipping. No cargo for the colonies can be shipped in the meantime.

A launch with three men left Whakatane on Sunday night and is missing. It is feared that it foundered in a, heavy gale. The names of the occupants are not available. LATER. The occupants of the launch were Messrs Wylie, Thompson and Wilson. They had no provisions. The weather was tempestuous. Very little hops is entertained of a rescue.
