Company’s now two thousand five hundred ton steamer Suva, intended for the Sydnoy-Fiji trade, arrived from Glasgow. STATE-OWNED STEA-.iERS. MELBOURNE, May 20. Tho Labor members of tho Shipping Commission regard the arrangement made by the New Zealand Government for the shipment of Government goods by tho West of England service as a strong argument in favor of tho Federal Government owning a lino of steamers to convey mails to and from England. As a result of enquiries in London, Mr Coghlan has informed the Federal Mail Services Commission that the estimated cost of a steamer of the type of the Mongolia or Macedonia, provided with facilities for tiro carriage of perishable products, would range from £335,000 for a
sixteen knot vessel to £406,000 for a 20knot one, while the additional cost if fitted with turbine machinery would range from £2OOO to £SOOO according to the speed. The cost of a first-class intermediate steamer, used mainly for cargo and perishable goods, would range from uctwcon £282,000 for a 14-knotter and £311,000 for a 16-knotter. The information is apropos to the proposal to establish a Commonwealth line of steamers. THE BARQUE PITCAIRN ISLAND. LONDON, May 19. The barque Pitcairn Island, bound from Wellington to Loudon, was burnt at sea in latitude 525., longitude 90W. The captain and officers and ten of the crew landed at Port Maullin, Chili. The first .officer and eight men i nanother boat are missing. The estimated insurances on the barque Pitcairn Island are £120,000.
