FOOTBALL NOTES.
(liy "Kick Off,") Tlic exhibition of footliall given by the Star ami Orey Seniors on Saturday was far from being good, the backs now and (lien having a little to do. Another mistake the drey backs indulged in was long kicking tip the field without finding the line. ' I hope to see the drey scrum in better l if >u today so as to give their brilliant back team a show. On Saturday the Star backs would not pa-ct. though ’they got the hall from every screm, while the dreys wore collaring I heir men high. Will they ever collar low ? When Corbett plays he will have many keen critics to watch him. I suppose he will he giving out some of the wrinkles learnt at Home; Last week I suggested forming a Referees’ Association, but so far nothing has been done in the mailer. Football refereeing will not be satisfactory till the above is done. In last Saturday’s match, Parkinson, who played wing three-quarter for Grey, was the best man on the field, while Purcell, another man, was very good at full. McKay, who was at five-eighths, a new position to him, played very well, and should turn out a smart man. The proposed shield competition between Nelson, Marlborough, Duller and Coast is likely to eventuate. The Union had better look sharp about arranging the fixtures for the Trotting Club shield, so as not to leave everything till too late in the year. Cluhs wanting their teams inserted in the “Star,” are requested to send them in not later than Thursday, Referees are requested to send the names of players, who take part in matches under their control to (In'Secretary of (he Union at the earliest opportunity after the match.
