THE GREYMOUTH CRUSHING MILLS.

OPENING OF GEO. MERRETT AND SON'S PREMISES.

Yesterday wo were present at: tho opening of the above firm's crushing, grain and produce stores. It is always gratifying to nolo enthusiastic citizens launching out into new industries, especially when the methods of production are an innovation, and make no encroachment on others' business. Less than two months ago Geo. Merrett and Sons determined to enter the above business, believing they would supply a need that has long existed on the Coast. THE PREMISES.

For the purpose a large building in Thompson street has been purchased. It lias a central position, and easily accessible. Its size is 100 ft by 33ft, and has two stories, so that ample storage room is provided for all kinds of produce. At the right entrance are two nicely finished offices, while for the purpose of loading and unloading grain the landing runs into the building a distance of 15ft. This facility makes loading and unloading an easy matter.

THE PLANT. On the left, when entering the premises, one is struck with the excellent 12-brake horse-power gas engine. It is one of the latest make, by the celebrated "Acme" Company of Glasgow. Its design is for strength, durability and easy running, anil the firm may well feel proud of this power, that will work their machinery. A few feet distant are the crushing mills. They are of English manufacture, and have all the latest improvements for crushing. They have great capacity, and will crush from the largest corn to the smallest seed. The intermixing machinery for poultry feeds will enable the firm to produce these requirements at the lowest price. Tho feed hopper is taken to the top story, where the corn is emptied, leaving the machine to do the rest of the work without further trouble save from attending the crushed corn in the sacks below. Later the firm purpose adding machinery for kibbling, etc. The machine is connected with the engine with a Linkum belt that works admirably. ! '.,'

THE PRODUCE. The large store is well filled with all kinds of produce. Prime oaten chaff, feed oats, fowl wheat, pollard and potatoes, etc., are in abundance. All these lines have been purchased at lowest, cash prices, and are to be sold to consumers at the lowest margin of profit.

SEED. We were shown an excellent line of oats that had, been specially cleaned for the purpose of seed. They are beautifully bright and full, andshould yield to the farmer an excellent crop. The firm has adopted a method of posting samples to farmers and others requiring seed. IN WORKING ORDER. By the slightest, move of a lever the machinery was set in motion, and the work of crushing begun. The oats rolled into the sacks ready for horse feed. Unnrushed oats are evidently not to be compared to crushed so far as utility to the horse is concerned. That the crushed feed is easily digested and the full nutriment received is obvious. The uncrushed oats eaten by the majority of horses does the animals practically no good. The firm purpose crushing oats for all who may require them. Merchants having o»ders for this class of
