The members of the W.C.T.U. gave a social on Friday evening in the vestry of the Methodist Church, to the sailors in port. A large number were present both from steamers and sailing vessels. The programme was carried out by the Misses Williams, Sweetman, Dickie, Chapman, and Mr F. Sweetman, the accompanists being Mrs MTntosh, Misses Batchelor and Dickie. At a recent meeting of the governors of the Marlborough High School a motion was put and carried to expunge the regulation dealing with the allocation of the statutory free places. The regulation—which, as it stood, was known as tho “poverty clause,’’ from tho fact that only those unable to pay were eligible for free places —now gives way to the method of deciding according to meric alone who shall acquire free seats.

The Christchurch Fruiters’ Association has passed the following resolution: “Seeing that no effectual steps are being taken to clear the colony of fruit especially codlin moth, which are being spread over the country wholesale, this association considers the present system of fruit inspection to be a complete farce and xli 3 restrictions on imported fruit an injustice, both to the trade and to the whole community. Further, that steps be taken to bring the matter before Parliament, with a view of having these restrictions removed.”
