Melbourne This Day.
The steamer Melbourne has arrived from Newcas do and reports a hurricane all down the coast. Everything movable has been swept away. The vessel ashore at Cape Patterson is the barque Artisan, bound to Manila from Newcastle in ballast. Site was struck during the gale at 3 on Monday morning. All hands reached the shore safely and are waiting till the flood subsides in Powlett Fiver in order to reach San Remo. With the heavy sea running the barque is doomed.
The Artisan is owned by Thomas and Coy, St John’s New Brunswick. The George Hay is anchored behind Cape Woolamai and unable to get out without assistance. She is in danger of dragging her anchors. Melbourne, April 24.
Captain Purdy, of the Artisan, states that they were GO miles beyond Cape Patterson and driven back by the gale. The sails were all carried away. The weather was the worst he ever experienced. They were driven about-at the mercy of the elements for many hours, and big seas were continuously breaking aboard. At three o’clock on Tuesday morning she struck the rocks and was hold fast. The waves continued breaking over her. It was pitch dark, and they had a most anxious time till dawn, when they found themselves a hundred yards from the shore. At low water all aboard, including the captain’s wife, managed to scramble ashore safely. The latest news is that the George T. Hay. is dragging her anchors.
