Recruiting for the Cape.

CiiRiSTCHUKCir, April 22

Capt. F. B. Hughes, of Brabrant's Horse, who is at present here on furlough, is inuting recruits for that regiment. Over 2000 young men have a'ready communicated with him, and a good many have signed their names as willing to go. Capt. Hughes left for Wellington tonight to enroll further recruits. School Matters. We are advised that Private Mays, of the New Zealand Artillery, son of Mr Oliver Mays, Devonport, died at Kakemoor from the result of an accident. The Law Society. The annual report of the council of the District Law Society shows membership 91 of whom 63 practice in the city and 28 in the country. The council state that thero were fewer complaints against the conduct of tho practitioners than hitherto but none of the charges were serious. Tho Council understands that two objections are made- by the courts of "the Australian colonies to the admission of New Zealand solicitors. The first was that New Zealand law requires that practitioners qualified beyond colony should pass an examination in New Zealand law beforo admission in the colony, and the sacond that New Zealand law prescribes no period of articles or service in a so iuitor's office to insure practical experience but merely examination in general knowledge. Tho Council think tho first objection could bo removed but can seo no. way to obviate the second except by amending the law that in New Zealand as in alt other colonies, and in England experienco in practice as well as knowledgo should bo an essontian qualificatiod. A Swindler Exposed. Frederick Winward, with soveral aliases, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment at 'tho Magistrates Court to-day for an attempted swindle. He represented that ho was the manufacturer of a patent medicine, and induced Percy Adamson to come from Opunaki under a supposed engagement to vend tho medicine in Australia. On arrival in. Wellington Windward wanted Adamson to advance £lO on account of passage money and other expenses ; but a swindle being suspected the police were informed Suicide. Dunedin, April 22. Amy Susan Heather, 21 years, committed suicide to-day at Anderson's Bay

bridge. She was seen in the water by a butcher, who tried to aid her but was unable to swim. He went to get a boat and on returning found no trace of her. Some of her clothes were found and a letter to her mother asking to be forgiven. ; The girl had bsen in bid health and desi pondent for some time. The body has not yet been recovered. Body Found.
