Brisbane, April 22,
The Homo Sscretary received a message from the Hon John Douglas, Speci »1 Commissioner for New Guinen, covering a message from the Government Besident which gives the seano of the supposed mas-sacro as Caoribata Island, at the mouth of the Aird River. The party landed, intending to return to tho mission schooner was surrounded by a fleet of canoes. The native? removed all the food, clothes, and tools, but did not touch the crew. Tho schooner cruised about till tho following day, and then left for Port Mosesby. Mr Douglas adds that there is a possibility that tho party are still prisoners in tho hands of tho natives, but ibis not in accordance with their habits. It is still more difficult to account for tho f-iec that when they looted the schooner tho crew were not touched. The list of tho supposed murdered is— Chalmers, Tomkios (half-caste), James Walker, the Chief of the Kavas tribe, and nino coloured mission students.
