FOOTBALL.
Red Roses v. Star.
A football match was played in Victoria Fark on Saturday afternoon, between the Bed Rose and Star Clubs. Mr Reynolds acting as referee, and not only acting impartially andjwell but in a manner calculated to improve football. The Roses were tbe heavier team, and played mostly a forward game ; indeed, there was a good deal of rawness about the game that will doubtless wear off as the season advances. The game resulted in the Roses scoring 9 to their opponents 5. For the Roses Chapman scored twice, and West also crossed the line, while Parfitt scored for the Stars and McPherson converted. Among the players M’Carthy for the Stars stood out prominently, a little chap, but always on the ball; never making a mistake. The football match of the Greymoutb Union and Paroa teams resulted in a victory for the former by 9 points to 6. Mr J. Fraher had charge of the whistle daring the game.
