[Per Press Association.] The Census. Oamaku, April 21. The census gives the population of Oamaru at 4 836. A decrease of 389 on the number at the census of 1896. Fire Near Dunedin. Dunedin, April 21. The Star Roxburgh correspondent wires that Vcalo Bros, stores at Miller’s Flat was completely destroyed by fire last night. The loss is estimated at £350 above the insurance. The origin is unknown. The Federal Contingent. 25 Otago men under Capt Stonoham have left for Christchurch to join the federal escort. Other officers are : Lieut Strong; Pipermajor Gray, and Capt. Loarby. A party of four pipers and five engineers leave on Monday to complete the party.

Trade Disputes. Wellington, April 20. Tho hearing of tho dispute between the Cooks and Waiters’ Union and Employers continued to-day, but was adjourned until the 29th inst. Catholic Schools. Wellington, Aprii 20. Inspectors of tho Wellington Education Board, during tho year just closed, examined eight Roman Catholic schools, and state that in those schools (which generally were lully staffed by pains-taking and diligent teachers) 1212 children were presented for examination, 009 being classed in standards, and of those 558 were promoted. Heading, writing and spelling are reported to receive fairly duo attention ; arithmetic distinctly improved ; sowing and singing were good features, but science, geography and subjects mostly taught orally were backward. Land Settlement. Nelson, April 20. During the last two days 5000 acres of land at Rndmor in tho Midland Railway area have been secured by forty-one applicants. Tho land is about twenty miles from the railway and an unbridged river hinders communication at present. There are some two thousand acres yet to bo disposed of.
