The Wellington butchers have adopted a scheme of insurance against loss on cattle condemned at the abattoirs, or killed in transit. On every bullock the seller and the vendor each pay is, and on every cow is 6d, so that the premiums are respectively 2s and 3s on each class ot beast. Sheep are not included iu the scheme, and there is no regulation as to the inspection of pigs. The system applies only to Juhnsonville market. The principal aucliouers pay the fee on each beast sold, collecting it from the original vendors. 'I he buyer also pays his fee on receiving delivery.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the County Council will be held on Monday next, 6UI instant, at the usual hour -10 a.m. Last night the Collingvvood Club took for' its subject of debate “ Leasehold is a better tenure than Freehold,” Rev. Parker taking the affirmative, and Mr Bean the negative The debate was very spirited and enthusiastic, Messrs Blake, Tyree, G. Field and R. N. Allan speaking in favour of the Freehold, and Messrs H. H. Riley, W. Fowler, and R. Sciimgeour in favour of Leasehold. Ihe voting resulted in a victory for Leasehold 27 to 18. Mr Bradshaw made an efficient chairman. Next week the subject is “Trial by Jury,” Miss Seraphina Angelina Love having issued a writ for damages against George Adolphus Albert, for Breach of Promise. A large audience is expected, and it will probably be hard to find seating accomodation.

The death of Mr T. J. Baigent of Takaka having caused a vacancy on the Nelson Education Board, Mr G. H. Allan announces that he will be a candidate for the position, and that he will circularise all school committees interested in due course.

In our advertising columns Mr Hugh Page, of Takaka, announces his intention of standing for election to fill the vacancy on the Nel son Education Board caused by the decease of Mr T. J. Baigent. Mr Page has served on the Lower Tanaka School Committee for about 14 years; was for several years chairman before the establishment of the High School, and for two years since it was established. Mr Page was also President of the Golden Bay A. & P. Association, conducting its affairs through one of its most trying years.
