A Church Social is being promoted by the local Ladies’ Guild, to be held ou Friday week, *7lll instant. The object of the social is to raise funds to carry ou church work, such as providing for the lighting and cleaning of the Church, etc. Ihe Guild is destitute ol funds now, and hopes that this appeal to the public will be well re sponded to. The proceedings were very auimaled, amusing, and interesting, the subject under discussion being "Should New Zealand adopt compulsory military training ” Mr Bean was the opener in the affirmative, and was supported by MessrsSansoin and Foley, the negative view being advocated by Mr Bradshaw, who had as henchmen Messrs Sanders, Rol. McGrane. Ryan, and H. B. Riley. Several of the public also took part in the discussion, including two ladies, Mrs A. H. Fletcher and Miss Bredbury. A vote resulted in a very close division, the voting being 21 in favour and 18 against ttie adoption of the system. The Rev. Darker occupied the chair. Next Wednesday’s subject will be "Is Sport carried to excess in New Zealand.” The respective sides will be opened by Messrs H. B. Riley aud Ryan.
