NEW TREATMENT FOR OBESITY.

THE SIMPLE SCIENCE OF RE-

MOVING UNWELCOME FAT

Women are divided into two classes those who wish to get fat and those who wish to get thin. The latter predominate, because they suffer the most from the heat. Making thin people fat is a difficult task. J3ut there is no reason for any fat woman to remain fat unless she li .es it or has some chronic disease. A scheme of treatment of which we know has reduced a woman twentyfive rounds in six weeks. What she did any other woman can do ; no expense is attached to the treaton nt. end so far, every person who has tried it his been benefited and has lost from three to five pounds a week', losing rather less the first week and more the second. Losing five pounds a week is enough, When the reduction is too sudden there is a strain somewhere. t onlracted muscles are prime lactor.- in achieving what, we call a

row ofdonl.de chins. If the woman with two or three chins will put her hard up to lud neck, on either side of the larynx or in' front of the ears, she will feel how short her neck rni.s;lcp. are in comparison with those of normal people. There is nothing the matter with these neck muscles except that they have not been used and are stiff and shortened like rubber bands that, have been lying in disuse. A fat person cannot begin by going through neck exercises. The ueck exercises described below must be done very gradually until all the muscles are lengthened and until the layer of fat has been absorbed.

A woman must deny’ herself more than seven or seven and a half hours' sleep a day. She must cut out na'.s and lounging, but the new obesity treatment is not a martyrdom. The diet, is only a little severer than the regular health diet which is the foundation of good 100 s. The fat woman must not drink alcoholic liquors of any kind. She may drink tea or coffee, sweetened with saccharine tablets instead of sugar, and just sufficient milk to make the‘beverage palatable. All bread must be toasted. Pastries, cream, fats, potatoes, beans, and peas are the articles of diet which she must strilce. from her menu.

During the treatment, the breakfast should, consist. of one cup of tea, toast, with salt instead of butter, and one iamb chop. Omit Luncheon. Dinuer should be a substantial meal, with meat, green vegetables, salad, and fruit. Every morning before breakfast take a cup of hot water with lemon juice, and the same again at night. In the course of the day take four to six glasses of hot water.

On arising, after taking the hot water, go through the exercises given below, spending from fifteen to twenty minutes at them. Work to the point of fatigue, but not. beyond Four times a day take five minutes breathing exercise before an open window. Deep breathing, as every one knows, is one of the greatest aids in consuming carbon or fat.

Following are the exercises which, with the course of treatment outlined above, have never failed yet to achieve the results. They are not many, five neck exercises 5 and some chair exercises. Do each one until you are tired, and go through them after your daily bath in the morning and at night before retiring. The neck exercises can be done at odd moments during the day. and the habit of holding the neck as high as possible at all times will help lengthen ami strengthen the muscles.

1. Very slowly raise the head, lifting the neck and producing the sensation of lifting up your head by the ears.

2 and 3. Lower the head very slowly until the chin rests on the chest ; relax the bead and neck and let the bead fall back as far as possible ; now stiSen the muscles and slowly bring your head back to its normal position. 4. Turn the head around to the right as far as possible, stretching the muscles as much as yoiu can ; bring the head around in front and turn very slowly to the other side —repeat, each of these exercises until fatigued. Twist a towel into a cord, hold it at each end. swing the arms over the head and bend the body forward, bringing the arms down until they touch the floor. Raise again, swing the arms up over the head, bring them down to the shoulders with the towel behind the head and rub vigorously across the shoulders with the towel from right to left. Lower the hands, bend the body backward as far as possible and then bring arms and body back into the first position.

The following chair exercises, will also be found of the utmost value for reducing the abdomen. Sit on a stool, preferably one without a back, feet planted firmly on the ground and bend the body forward, letting the arms swing down until they touch the floor ; raise the body slowly and swing over to the right, the arms hanging to the right, bending, as far as possible, from the waist. Reverse the exercise, bending to the left. These exercises must be done very slowly. Sit with, the hands on the hips and turn the upper part of the body around first to the right, then to the left as far as possible without mowing the feet, going through the movements very slowly*—“Popular Science Siftings.” a
