Gillespie’s) and that the vote had been increased accordingly. —Resolved that if the contractor finds the necessary deposit (£10) the lender will be accepted, on the motion of Crs James and Riley. Cr James referred to the necessity for seeing that the contractor for the work left the approaches to the Bridge in proper repair.—Left in the hands of the Inspector. C UK KRAI.. Resolved on the suggestion of the Chairman, that cheques be drawn for royalty on materia! for Ferntowri-Pakawau' Road, due to Messrs A. R. Scrimgeottr and W. P. Ferguson, and held until quantities are verified by tire Inspector. Next ordinary Meeting. Resolved, on the suggestion of the Chairman, that the next ordinary meeting be held on Friday, Ist October, in order to consider applications for the dual position of Clerk and Engineer advertised for.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Council was held on Saturday evening last. Present : The Chairman and Crs Riley, Fish, James, and Flowers. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to discuss matters of importance which had arisen—a threatened legal action by Mr J. G. Lash, aud the result of the King case particularly ; also to deal with tenders. Formal notice was received from Mr Lash that unless his claim of £2B 10s for land taken and fencing in connection with Avery’s Hill Road, was paid forthwith legal proceedings would be taken, After discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Crs James and Flowers that the claim be paidsubject to adjustment after com pletion of survey, if necessary. King’s Action.—The Chairman referred to the judgment given in this case, and suggested the advisability of an appeal, as lie considered the Council had been most “shamefully treated” in the matter. Crs generally did not fall in with the idea of auy more litigation over the matter, aud it was resolved on the motion of Crs Flowers and Fish that the amount of the judgment and costs be paid at once and the matter settled.—The Chairman voted against the motion, TENDERS The following tenders Were received for carting bridge timber from Ouekaka to Bishop’s Washout ; W. Ives, ripper 100ft* Or £3* for the whole. S. M. Riley, ,435 for the whole, R. li. Strange, 6/- per iooft. Mr Strange’s tender was accepted, CORRESPONDENCE. Rua Taniwha Bridge.—A telegram was received from the Mines Department intimating that Cabinet had approved of the acceptance oi the lowest; tender for this worts,
