COLLINGWOOD ROAD BOARD.

"The Board met on Saturday week 7th inst. Present : Messrs Peart (Chairman), R. Riley, Grant, Walker, and Scrimgeour. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. INTERVIEWS. Mr A. Berry attended to object to the Boards action in giving permission to dredge a road line at Kaituna, and asked the Board to get a legal opinion on the subject.—lt was pointed out that the Board had already been legally advised in regard to the matter. —Resolved that no steps |bo taken to alter the Boards' previous decision. Mr Berry also referred to the encroachment of the Kaituna river near Kemps.—Messrs Riley and Grant were appointed to inspect the spot, and report at next meeting. Mr Kemp "attended again in reference to his claim for £5 compensation for land taken for road at Bonny Doon. — Reliable information was roceived that the road-lino at the spot oomplained of was one chain wide, —Resolved on the motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Mr Scrimgeour, that the road be measured, and if #ound to encroach on Kemp's land to be either removed or compensation paid. —Messrs Riley and Grant were appointed to attend to the matter, and r report at next meeting. Mr Mace attended to ask that the ■Board should make a by-road leading -from the main road at the 17-mile Creek to the Aorere River bank, recently purchased through J. _ Skilton's property, about 8 chains, which he estimated would cost about £2O for forming and gravelling. —Mr Grant, who was visiting the locality, was appointed to report same at next , meeting. Mr F. Tyree attended and asked permission to use timber at the port for kerbing footpath near his hotel.— -Permission granted. Mr J. Richards attended to ask that some work be done on road-line down the Patarau River, Taitapu, giving access to land recently purchased by him from the Taitapu Estates Co., and offering £lO towards £3O worth of work; and also asking permission to fell bush on the road-line, 20 chains, at the usual rates —Resolved that he be informed that the road is not a public- road, and the Board cannot undertake'to spend public money theroon - -. , Mr J. Golding wrote, and also attended, in re obstructions in Creek at Bonny Doon running through G. James' land ; and as to trees felled into a creek running through Mrs Fish's land at Bonny Doon, in both cases detrimentally affecting his land.—Mr Golding stated that the obstructions complained of were causing him great loss and inconvenience. —Mr Walker said that the obstructions were really causing the Creek through Golding's land to silt up.—Mr Grant reported that Mr James was taking steps to clear the creek through his land.—The Clerk was instructed to give the necessary notices to Mr James and Mrs Fish.to remove obstructions, and to Start within ten days. Mr Golding also drew attention to the necessity for repairs to creek crossin" on Langford's land.—Resolved that Mr Walker have the requisite work Mr J. Drummond, contractor for supply of gravel on the Main Road, attended to state that he could not complete his No. 2 Contract, and asked to be relieved of the same.—The matter was left in abeyance till next meeting, to enable Drummond to get someone to take the contract over from him, if possible. MrM. Gannon attended to ask fewrepairs to road from Upper Rooky to Snow's.—Held over. UNFINiSFIEO BUSINESS. The sub-committee appointed to enquire into complaints re stagnant water lodging on certain sections m Gbbstown, recommended that stepsmight be taken to abate the nuisance by providing a main drain to tap the low lying land, if the respective owners would make the ne.essary collections. The Clerk was instructed to make this BUffsestion to the land-owners, and also give them formal n»t : oo that they must remove the nu'.-.ance complained

of, as it is a menace to public health. H. Parry's Road.—Mr Walker reported what was necessary to do any good on this road, cost about £lO. Resolved that Parry be offered £5 to do £lO worth of work, Mr Walker to lay off the work if offer accepted. Mr Grant reported that the removal and re-erection of Curnow's fence in cutting on Curnow's byroad, rendered necessary by the road cutting being taken too close to the fence, would co.st about 10s, —Resolvad that Mr Cur now bo offered 10s to do the work. CORRESPONDENCE. .- E. B. Langford wrote stating that under agreement made with his father, E. A. Langford, the Board was to pay for necessary fencing on road taken through his land at Bainham by 29th September, instant, and offering to erect the fence at 11/6 per chain and find all material ; also calling attention to necessity of footbridge on Cook's Road. —Resolved on the motion of Mr Riley, seconded by Mr Grant, that the offer to fence bo accepted, and that Mr Walker be empowered to have the foot bridge attended to. From J. W. Ferguson, stating that Mr Taylor had made extensive excavations on road at Puponga, which materially interfered with the completion of the contract which he (Ferguson) had for improvements to the said road, and he therefore declined to proceed with the work unless paid extra —Mr Ferguson also attended and explained what Mr Taylor had done on the road.—Some discussion ensued, mambers recognising that owing to Mr Taylor's repeated agressions on the public road in spite of frequent warnings severe measures would have to be resorted to.—Resolved that the work in Ferguson's contract interfered with by Taylor's operations remain in abeyance at present until the matter is settled with Mr Taylor ; and that Mr Taylor be notiGed that he must desist from interference with the road and make good all damage done eo the road by him or his workmen from the mudfiat onward. From J. G. Lash, covering account for work doua on Slate River Ros,d.— Received, and account to be paid. From James Walker, covering account for repairs to Tramline Road, at Ferntown.—Account to be paid, From G. P. Graham, asking for repairs to road at Bainham. —Recoived, the work already having been attended to. From Manager Union Bank, Nelson, cskmg for resolution in re signing of cheques.—Resolved that the necessary resolution be passed. From Dr Lucas, giving notice of existence of scarletina in several houses in Gibbstown. —Received. From A. T. Maginnity, making demand, on behalf of Mrs 0. Rowe, for compensation for land taken for road through her property.—The Clerk explained that the road in question was that fronting the Sports ground, and that the matter must be a very old affair.—Mr Riley considered that the matter had been fixed up when the road was taken, over 20 years ago'. —Resolved that Mr Maginnity be informed that the Board does not recognise any liability in the matter. From N. L. Buchanan, attorney for Taitapu Gold Estates, thanking the Board for subsidy granted for repairs to roau leading to Golden Ridge.—Received. From R. McKenzie, M.H.R., stating that he would attend to the Board's wishes in regard to the Counties Bill before Parliament. —Received with thanks. From R. Jamieson, calling attention to collection of timber in Bonny Doon River, which v/as endangering the road; also to bad state of by-road to the river.—Mr Peart was appointed to inspect the timber, with power to act; and the other matter was held over. From T. Humphries, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, stating that Mr S. D. Lash had applied for the exclusive right of grazing over the Caves Reserve, in return for looking after Iho Caves, and asked if Mr Lash was a suitable man for the purpose named.— The Clerk was instructed to reply that Mr Lash was a suitable man, but that the Board considered no person should have exclusive right to the Reserve, and suggest that things remain as they are.

From Agnes Harvey, complaining that the public travelling over her land at Ferry Point, were not confining themselves to the beaten road, bat making roads indiscriminately over her land : also that the gates on the said road are repeatedly left open, causing her much loss and inconvenience.—Resolved that the Clerk post notices on the gates warning the public that they must be closed, and that one road must be adhered to. From J. James, Jnn., asking for repairs to his by-road at Bainham.—lt was pointed out that some £2B of " Thirds" money was due on this road, and Messrs Walker and Grant were appointed to lay off about £2O •worth of work. GENERAL. On the personal application of Mr G. H. Allan, representing the Slate River Sluicing Company, Mr Grant was empowered to expend £5 in repairs to road to Canterbury Hill. Mr Cirant was appointed to report on encroachment of Aorere River near S. D. Lash's, and to make enquiries as to the best methods of prevention. Complaints were roceived that the existence of workmen's camps on the Puponga-Whaririki Road was still a nuisance.—Resolved that the men be ordered to remove the camps at once, or the matter will be placed in the hands of the police. Oh the application of Mr G. H. Alliin, Messrs Grant and Riley were appointed to define the road through Brown's sections, Kaituna, recently given to the public by the Kaituna River Gold Dredging Company, in order that same may be surveyed and duly transferred. Bonny Doon Road.—Mr Grant drew attention to the dangerous state of this road, and offered £5 towards the cost of repairs to same if .£2O is spent by the Board. —After some discussion it was resolved that Mr Grant be empowered to have repairs affected—the material necessary to be supplied by the yard. Mr Flanders was instructed to repair a bridge on Swamp Road. ' In reply to Mr Walker it was resolved that Mr C. Jeffries be allowed to finish his contract on by-road near Wood's, Bainham. ACCOUNTS. Totalling £64 were presented and passod for payment. One account was held over, and one reduced. The Board rose at 9 p.m.
