The Trustees of the Institute elsewhere frail a public meeting for Tuesday evening next, for the purpose of taking the tinal steps required by law to incorporate the Institution in the public of the district. The Rakawau sale-of-work, social, etc., which took place on the 22nd Dec., was well patronised, and consequently the somewhat substantial surplus of £6 8s 8d was realised, £3 of which goes to the Cemetery Fund, the rest to the Sunday School Library fund. The Fern town, people held their Xmas Tree and Entertainment' on Monday evening last, this also being well attended bv re idents from all parts. The usual dance followed, and quite an enjoyable evening resulted.

The public picnic to The Caves held on Tuesday last attracted quite a crowd of people, and a very pleasant day was put in in this fascinating resort of picnicers and tourists. Mr Tyree’s acetylene gas was taken into the Caves and the light produced among the myriads of stalactites and stalagmites was very effective indeed. The camera was brought into requisition in the Caves and by the aid of the gas a photo of the picnicers was taken from “ the Balcony.” In the evening a social dance was held at the Hall and formed a very enjoyable windup to the day’s outing. The holidays in the district practically concluded on Tuesday last, when most of the workmen at the different mining works returned by the Darkly and immediately left for their respective camps, there to commence afresh the labors of another year, Messrs Abbot, Hursthouve, Hurso, Maoo, Perry, and Giles have all taken up their duties as managers at tlieir respective stations and work will be put in hand earnestly this week. Mr F. Johnson has been detained in Nelson by illness, but is expected to be about again almost at once. Sittings of the S.M. and Warden’s Courts'Svill be held here on Wednesday next. I.2th. inT.
