* It is a duty all owe to themselves, and a privilege which they will not have the ' opportunity of exercising for another three years. In the case of the election of a Licensing Committee it is also incumbent on all electors to go to the poll in the interests of the Couuty. Messrs Riley and Baigent having come forward as representatives of this end of the electorate, the least those persons most concerned can do is to do their level best to have them returned. We have little doubt but that, if returned, these two gentlemen will act fairly and impartially towards all classes of the community ; if they do not means will soon be found to forcibly show the disapprobation of the electors. We trust that on Wednesday next the somewhat lethargic attitude of the Colling wood electors will be shaken off, and that a fair proportion of them will do justice to the County by recording their votes for Messrs Riley and Baigent, r by which means only this en i of the licensing district can be properly looked after. After a glance at the names of the candidates nominated at Westport, I all of whom are personally known to us, we have no fear of unjust treatment from a Committee elected from such straightgoing men, and we compliment the Westport electors on their selection of candidates. Notwithstanding this fact, however, we feel that this County will suffer . nothing by having representatives on tho Committee wholly conversant with its licensing requirements, and that being so we hope to see them returned.

The crew of the Scylla, who divided first money in the Four Oared Inrigged Race at the late Collingwood Regatta, with the crew of the Ripple, have donated their portion of the prize money to Mr T. Nalder, Commodore of the Regatta, as a slight recognition of his efforts to promote the success of the meeting. The donors were Messrs A. and F. Washbourn W. Caldwell, and ,T. Parker. A melancholy and somewhat sudden death in the family of Mr Arthur Berry occurred on Monday morning last, his six- year-old son, Warden, having passed away at 5 a.m. on that day. The little fellow was ill only a few days, and up to within a few hours of his death no serious results were anticipated. The cause of death is generally supposed to have been diptheria. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and a large number of friends of deceased’s parents followed the remains to the cemetery. In the absence in Nelson of the Rev Mr Hullett the burial service was impressively read by Mr W. C. Riley. Considerable anxiety is just now being caused in the minds of parents throughout the district through the visitation of an epidemic of sickness amongst many of the children, which presents all the symytoms of that dread disease diptheria Nearly a dozen children in different families have been and are still afflicted with a serious affection of the throat, which completely prostrates them for a time. The absence of a medical man is much felt on such occasions as these, and it would be a relief to many to have their doubts as to the nature of the sickness sot at rest. If in reality it is diphtheria then steps should be at once taken to prevent the spread of such a fatal disease by the closing of our schools and other

precautions, or the sad death we experienced this week will be only one of many that may take place in a very short space of time.

Our Westport correspondent telegraphs that the following candidates were nominated on Tuesday last for the Buffer District Licensing Committee :—Messrs M. Organ (Independent), Carr, Colvin, Dolan. Marshall, Munson (Moderates), Westport; W, J. Williams (Independent) Waimangaroa; T. Brown (Moderate), Dennistdn ; P. Ballantvne (Independent) Mokihinui; W. C. Riley (Moderate), Collingwood; T. J. All the candidates at the southern end are influential men, and keen interest is likely to bo taken in the contest at Westport. Mr Ballantyne publishes an address to the Collingwood electors elsewhere in this issue. At a meeting of the Collingwood School Committee held on Tuesday night a letter was read from Mr W. C. Hodgson stating that the Education Board would sanction the temporary appointment of a Probationer to the Collingwood School. It was therefore resolved to appoint Miss Maggie Hunter to the pjosition, the appointment to take effect from 2nd April next. ,It was also resolved that the teacher be instructed to supply the Committee monthly with the Dames of all children who do not attend school regularly, with a view to enforcing the coinpmlsory clauses of the Act and insisting npon the proper attendance of children at the school. Mr Haselden, Under Secretary to the Justice Department, paid a visit of inspection to the local R.M. and Warden’s Offices on Wednesday. The Inspector expressed great satisfaction with the manner in which the business of the Offices is conducted by the Clerk. The Road Board are inviting tenders for various works. The Rev Mr Hullett will hold divine services in this district on Sunday. Mr Jinks returned home from the Nelson Hospital yesterday, partially recovered from his recent accident.
