When Detective I*. Hayes and Constable AY. Wood, of Takiipuna, set out to “clean up” the raids on the beach cottages, they had at least one suspect in view. They knew that a youth had failed to return a motor cycle to its owner at Silverdale, and with only meagre description, they started out on a trail which was to lead them many miles. Inquiries were made at many seaside houses and baches along the road ana at each house a description of a man "'as left with the occupant. For t w days no trace of the suspect could he found, but on the third night after passing through the dense scrub and tea-tree overlooking Red Beach they found the remains of a camp on top of the highest hill in the loon lit v. The location gave the occ-upaut of the camp a wide panorama, of the countryside for miles around. On Sunday an organU" search of the hush over a wide area was made by a party of 11 sidents, -and although tlie district was thoroughly combed m trace could he found. Next day a suspect was seen in Silverdale. A -telephone message was sent to Constable Wood at Takapuua and he raced through to Silverdale. 1 motor car and made an arrest.
