SOLAR OBSERVATIONS

BY G. V. HUDSON (Aust and N.Z. Cable) Wellington, Feb. 2 8 “During the month of February, the sun was observed on 22 days,” reports Mr G. V r . Hudson, of Karori. “The disc was entirely free from spots on six of those days, but on four of the spotless days faculae were detected. Five distinct groups of very small sunspots were observed during the month, most of which were short lived. No spot was noted which had been observed during a previous rotation. The usual solar mottling was rather faint. These observations indicate that the sun’s activity is still at a very low ebb, but it seems likely that the intense minimum, which prevailed during many previous months, is now gradually giving place to a fresh cycle of solar activity.
