ELLERSLIE NOTES At Ellerslie on Tuesday morning More.hu completed six furlongs in I.IS 3-5. She finished up her task in gooc? style. Horowhcnua was too g-oodl for Grand Tonic and Charsong at the. end of five furlongs in 1.4. HOIO- - will be in good fettle for tho Franklin meeting. Bright Flower worked over six furlongs comfortably in 1.23 4-5. Ta-neriri was holding Wee Musk safely at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.17 4-5. Foreign Money left half a mile behind in 31 4-5, and Chief Clerk three furlongs ill 3&sec. Psvchologst was timed: to cover a round in 1.43, the last six taking

King Mark traversed a round in 1- 3 _ 5- the last six furlongs in ?.?t 2- and the final half mile in 32 2-Ssec. He could have improved on the time.

Lady Diana and Barograph reeled off half a mile in 51 sec. They were together at the finish. Catoma worked! over a round on the tan in 2-3 1-5. Kiltowyn and Chief Cook did useful tasks. A USEFUL FILLY La Moderne reappeared at Woodville after a lengthy spell. She is carrying a good deal of condition, and never threatened to get into the money, but she showed some pace and form, and on the second day was up with Sanguine King to the straight. She does not look like coming to hand very quickly, but will improve with the racing and make steady progress. . La Moderne looks greatly benefited by her spell. COLOSSI AN GOES SOUTH Colossian was. purchased last week by S. Barr for a jjatron of his stable, and has joined the active workers at Riccarton. Colossian, who was formerly trained' by Mrs A. McDonald, of Awapuni, had six races last season, as a two year old, without gaining a place, However, as he belongs to the same family as Royal Damon, Royal Blood and Hunting Call, he may develop into a payable proposition. GOOD CLASS GALLOPER Golden Chant has developed very good form w ith-the advance of the season, and she follow ed up her Marton successes with leading form at Trentham. She had her next start at the recent Woodville meeting-, and made light of her 0.9 to win vory easily. Golden Chant has settled down a lot from her earlier fliglitiness, and is now a good class galloper. T OTA LI SATO R AT CORE The win machine at the Gore summer meeting a year ago handled ,£5400 ios and the place ,£5464 10s. At last week’s meeting the totals were £7469 ios and £6299. It is understood! that the committee is likclv to revert to the old system of 75 per cent, and 25 per cent, next season. BROWN BETTY AMISS The speedy two year old Brown Betty has gone amiss and there is not much likelihood of her now fulfilling her autumn engagements. RURI SOLD Ruri, who was formerly trained' by A. Cook at To Awamutu for C. B. O’Donnell, lias been sold to J. Fryer, of Hawora. Mr O’Donnell intends to take an extensive trip abroad. WILL NOT START \ J. Fryer does not intend to start Gibraltar or Stanchion at the Franklin meeting, and they are to return home to Ilauera with Oriel and Rollovant. CARFEX INJURED While galloping at Te Aroha on Friday Carfex bruised a heel, and could not be started at the meeting. His next outing will probably be at Auckland and Avondale autumn meetings. TO BE TRAINED AT W INGATUI The Paper Money three year old Guarantee, who has been at Riccarton all the season, will in future be trained by D. P. Wilson at W ingatui, TO RACE AT TRENTHAM The Woodville three year old Red Manfred is looking- well at present, and is thriving- on the work allotted him. His next appearance will be at Trentham this month, when he will contest the St.' Leger and Challenge Stakes. ONLY ONE NOMINATED Only one horse, Orapai, was nominated for the St- Patrick’s Handicap to bu decided at the annual meeting of the punake Racing Club on March 17. At a special meeting of the . committee it was decided to delete the race from the programme, and in consequence there will be only seven events now. RETURNING TO FORM Curie had his first racing for several weeks when he ran at the recent Woodville meeting, and judging by his form there he should: be in the money at the approaching Wlelington fixture this month. BETTER BRED HORSES An Australian, w riter remarks ; My opinion why the horses are better bred in England and New Zealand is that they have a moister, cooler climate, a longer period of green herbage before conception and during the period of gestation and lac-

tation, and probably a fresher water or a difference in the mineral content of a flowing- stream. SILVER SCORN Advice from Sydney credlit Silver Scorn with training- on satisfactorily at Randwick. She is to be given a run in the Randwick Stakes next Saturday, in which she will carry 8.11. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS The following riding- engagements are announced for the Franklin meeting to be held on Saturday : FI. Wiggins: Golden Sceptre, Whakapara, Wee Pat (Mack Cup). E. Hanson : Lady Diana. Wee Pat (Maden). A. G.Parsons: Barograph, Jalidy Karo, United. J. Burgess: Patutahi. G. Jenkins : Morohu. A. Murray: Hushing, Capris. T. Williams: Tenakoe, Grand Tonic. MR KEMBALL’S HORSES The half dozen of Mr Kemball’s two year olds who were to have been sent to Australia early in the month (Barnum, Cape Morn, Cape Lilock, Willwyn, Cape Rose and Sir Quex) will now be leaving on March 15 next (says the Post). Their trip was probably cancelled because the boat called in at llobart en route to Melbourne, and Mr Kemball did not wish the horses to have so long a voyage. All the yearlings Mr Kemball bought at the January sales have been broken in and are. now being taken down to the tracks.
