DISCORDANT NOTE

At the Band Contest RASPBERRY FOR JUDGE PR EAR R ANG ED PLOT FOR THE MASSED BANDS A DESPICABLE ACT (Per Press Association) Wellington, March 1 A correspondent signing himself “Veteran Bandsman” in a letter to the Dominion criticises the action ol certain bandsmen in connection with the customary march played by the massed bands under the baton of the contest judge at the conclusion ol the Quickstep competition. He says: “The Judge, Captain Buckley, one ot New Zealand’s best hand conductors, gave the signal to start. The air was rent with the most hideous discordant sounds imaginable. A small percentage of the crowd thought it funny, blit 10,000 at least thought it a distardly and despicable act- on the part of a section of the .disgruntled and disappointed competitors. It was no secret in certain quarters that the episode was prearranged and that a ‘raspberry’ was to l>e meted out to the judge.”
