NATURE NOTE
A SHREWD BLACKBIRD A bird lover, who supplies food and drink for birds by tlie foothills of the Sierra Ma«lre Mountains, I'.S.A., teils a pleasant story in Nature Magazine. The writer saw a blackbird pick up a piece of bread which ha,j been hal'd dried by the sun. The bird hopped to the edge of a waterpan and deliberately dropped it into tlie water. It waited a while and then fetched out the morsel and ate the softened outer parts until the hard, core was reached. This remnant was dropped in the water for a final soaking and was then retrieved and devoured.
