It wo® the* crowning recognition by all classes of the unique record achieved by his" Grace in attaining tlie 60th year of his episcopacy, a remarkable achievement of which not alone the Catholic community hut all New Zealand is proud. The occasion was marked hv a Pape attendance, and a general air of enthusiasm and lovin'- reverence for the central figure, the venerable jubilariau.
Premier Forbes was one of tlie speakers. The aspect of the hall was enlivened by the appearance on the platform of the members of the Lierachy of New 'Zealand in the glowing robes of their episcopal office. After he. had heard many speeches laudatory of him and liis career. Archbishop* Redwood, in his reply, was responsible for a feat of concentration and memory that would he remarkable in almost any person. He had prepared his speech beforehand, hut, in the fifteen minutes it took him to deliver it. which he did in a strong, clear voice, he did not at any time refer to his notes and yet adhered exactly to the text of them almost throughout.
