The passengers and crew were ordered to leave tile ship, but Lawless disobeyed and remained aboard. Ultimately the submarine was sunk and Lawless was taken before a tribunal and reprimanded for disobedience in the face of tile enemy and then aw arded the Distinguished Service Medal. The defence stated that Lawless’s fraud was really an act of bravado.
