STAMP THEFT

MINISTER CLEARED XE W FOUNDLAND STAMPS (Aust. and N.Z Cable) St- John’s, Feb. 26 Mr W. J. Wialsh, who resigned recently as Newfoundland’s Minister of Agriculture and Mines, was freed today of criminal charges that followed an investigation into tlie disappearance of part of the Government’s stamp collection. Tlie Minister was charged with having appropriated three hound volumes of unused stamps, valued at between 5000 and 6000 dollars, from the closed Newfoundland Museum, housed in the same building as his department. The total losses from the museum and St. John’s Post, Office were estimated at 60,000 dollars. The stamps, collected 1" the Government over half a centurv. had been stored in the two buildings for safe keeping.
