THIRTY-SIX YEARS AGO (From the Feilding Star’s files) September 28, 1897 Instead of “beating the air” in attempting to get a training ship for “our boys” it would he much better if they were taught to milk cows. The dairy industry is assuming such large proportions that in the near future we may see as many young men employed as milkers as there are at the present time sheep shearers. Workmen are very scarce in the Apiti district. There are numerous enquiries for bush hands but there are none lo be ° ot ‘ ..... Tlie quarterly meeting of the Weslyan Church at Birmingham was held at Apiti on Thursday and presided over by the Rev. Mr Abemethv of the FeildingSandon circuit. After the usual business there was a social and supper. Songs were rendered by Mosdam.es Starr and Guy, Misses Buckman and Clayton and the choir gave several anthems. Air Guv proposed a vote of thanks to all the performers. . * i • •
A serious railway accident occurred at Auckland when three persons were killed and several injured among them being Thompson Leys, aged 14, son of the editor of the Auckland Star, who died this morning.
