April t» Regarding the British Mercantile Marine officers captured recently by pirates at Xewcliwaiig. tlie Foreign lAider-Secretary', Captain Elen, stated in the House of Commons that one of tlu* officers, Mr. E- L. Pears, arrived at Xewcbang on April 8 with a letter from tlie chief of tlie brigands demanding as ransome a considerable sum of money and a large quantity' of arms an I ammunition. It was stated that the eaptives had not been bound or ill-treated and bad been kept in a junk in the Paushan area since their captureThe local authorities, who liad been vigorously prosecuting a search for them, bad been informe 1 of Mr. Pears’ release, and requested to take independent action without first consulting the British Vice-Consul at Xewchwang, who was in constant touch with Ml developments and would take all possible meaures to secure the release of the captives.
