That Other Sensation NEXT GOVERNOR GENERAL MAY BE DE VALERA PROSPECT OF REPUBLIC (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) Dublin, Oct. 3. The retirement of Mr. McNeill, the Governor-General of the Irish Free State, has caused consternation in constitutional circles here. Mr. Cosgrave's junior. the Leader, says: Mr. do Valera has taken three months to remove Mr. McNeill, which is in accordance with the treaty, although perhaps he does not realise it. Surely Mr. de Valera within three months will have found a successor to submit to liis Majesty. Ir he does not provide a successor lie will lie ignoring the Constitution, as a judge’s Commission does not accord with tlie treaty. Thereafter the next step. London, Oct. 3. it is stated that Mr. Sean O’Kelly, when he discussed with Mr. J. 11. Thomas, at Ottawa, the renewal of the negotiations concerning the land annuities insisted thut a preliminary condition was the removal of Mr. McNeill. Government, circles are of tlie opinion that Mr. de Valera may appoint himself Governor-General, adding that tin' Free State at present' does not intend to leave the Commonwealth.
