CHINESE IN DISTRESS
LITTLE WORK AVAILABLE NEW DIFFICULTIES ARISE The Wanganui office of the Labour Department is confronted viht a problem in regard to impecunious Chinese who are on the verge of starvation. Owing* to the extensive growing of vegetables by F.uropeans the usual avenues of work are no longer open to Chinese. The department cannot send them to relief camps, because trouble might arise with other workers, and there is the .same objection to rncluding then in relief gangs. Some t of the Chinese are destitute, and arc ho longer able to pay the levy, nor are their countrymen able to keep them.
