What is the Government going to do .about the Hn.urn.ki vacancy? If there had been an acceptance of fuson by Mr (notes, the vacant ‘•eat would have been contested by a Reform candidate who would have had the support of the Hinted Party a s again q the Labour candidate* and the nominee of the Country "Party. At present t i.s to i».: a triangular duel, with the three candidates already well cm in the r campaign. The Foiled Party held its hand [lending the reply of Mr Coates to the offer of Premier Forbes. h there is to bo a Foiled earn!-date now, lie will have a rush time of it, for nominations close next Wednesday and the polling take s place a fortnight later, thus leaving only two and a half weeks for the selected man to cover a wide* spreading electorate. Mr J. Petrie, the Labour candidate, who i s being well supported by the party’s prominent leaders, is basing his attacks on the. Government mainly' on the economic policy, emphas’sing what Labour calls tile injustice of the C vil Serviee cuts. This is not likely to appeal to a farming community, for the men on the land reckon the public servants ni\* a. privileged class, the luckiest and the best off employees in the Dominbn. The farmer litre the man in the street, has already had severe' soli inflicted cuts.
