WORK OF THE MONTH ;MEETING LAST NIGHT NEED FOR ECONOMIES The Board of Managers of the Agricultural High School met last night at the School in North roaij. HEADMASTER’S REPORT Beginning on March 16 both boys ar« i girls spent a week in a programme of intensive physical trainjog. As far as the boys are concerned this lias been a regular custom for .some years, hut it was quite i> new idea for the girls. We are fortunate in haring teachers competent to give instruction in such exercises as rod drill »nd fencing, folk dancing anil eurythmics. as well as in physical'drill, and by routing instruction in these exercises anti inchl ling a programme of swimming, one at life-saving land drill, one at : staging and one lecture a day, a vard anti interesting programme was provided, and teachers, pupils and arents were all well please,l with the experiment. We have to thank M-s. Colqulioun. Mrs. .T. Darrngh. Miss Groeott. Sister Smith and Mr. iliiist who gave addresses during the week, and so contributed to the value of the training. On March 17 a party of farmers from (lie Brunswick branch of the Farmers’ Union visited the school iml the farms, and were conducted on a round of inspection by Mr. Caniphcl 1 and some of the staff. On March 25, Mr. de Castro, of the Napier High School Hoard of Managers, made a visit for the purpose of studying our equipment and methods. The tinal of the quarter-mile race for the Campbell Shield was swum on March 25 and was won by 11. M. Burgess with the following next in order: C. Allen, C. Mitchell, M. C. Kinder, N. Prebbie. I wish to record the names of tli.e following, all of whom 'entered for the race and completed the distance: Gollan nta., Herbert', Farmer, Kyle. Baker, Ilandricks rna., Carmine, Simpson, Hill ma., McDonald, Hand ricks uti. ECONOMY NEEDED A letter from Hie Education .Department emphasised the need for < outmiy in the use of material by pupil.- - , meu'iouing particularly writing pads and text books. , The Headmaster said so far as text hooks were concerned the School hail always made every endeavour to avoid changes, hut some changes tvoro unavoidable, as new hooks were required. Fur her. the School had r system which they called “Text Books Ltd,” whereby the pupils sold hooks to the School department, who te-sold to pupils who required litem at reduced prices. Mr. Wild added that he hud issued a circular to llse teaching staff urging every economy in the School, and 'encouraging the pupils to practise economy. LIBERAL DONATION The Headmaster acknowledged with hearty thanks a donation from Mr. S. M. llobhs of £4 4s which will he usal for the purchase of selections for tile art department. M \ Wild said Mr. Hobbs usually forwarded a donation of £2 2/- annually. The Board thanked Mr. Hobbs for lliu liberality. PERSONAE The members present at the meeting were: Mr. Jas.
