An official declaration of a- state of war following ftho revolt of the sth inst. at Madeira, was speedily followed by tho despatch of thousands of troops on. hoard the liner Podia, Gnn, from which, they disembarked under cover of the guns of a cruiser. Another steamer carries artillery and four aeroplanes, also the new Governor, Senor llundee, who, haw demanded the surrender of the rebels. CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE A message from Funchal, the chief town of Madeira, stated that on ths alleged instigation' of from. Lisbon the local troops and troops sent to deal with a relent general strike revolted. The- rebels arrested the High Commissioncr and the civil and military Governors, took oyer the telegraphs, telephones .the Bank of Portugal and the local Finance Department- and nominated General Sousa Bias ns Governor and head of a, military junta. A manifesto issued by the junta said tho [movement, was aimed at. abolishing the revolutionary regime.
