HERO OF HEROES
ROBERT FALCON SCOTT BYRD SALUTES HIM (Per Press Association). Oamaru, March 19.
In the pubiio gardens this afternoon, Rear-Admiral Byrd, in the course of his address before presenting tlie prizes for the Scott Memorial essays, paid a graceful tribute to the memory of the intrepid Bsritish explorer. Admiral Bvrd said: “There is one thing that the members of this expedition hold in common with the people of New Zealand ;t ha t is a deep respect for the memory of Captain Scott and his men. As for myself T think S.cbtt is the hero of heroes. . -It is in tlie- field of the spirit that he made his greatest contribution to. the world. Tilings of the spirit are much more important than material things. In failure he gained immortal fame, and in dying left to) you a heritage success could not. ha.ve given. When lie lost the superhuman struggle he calmly wrote the word which will make his memory honoured for all time . So' we' salute the name of this great-hearted gentleman, Robert Falcon iScott.”
