NOTES AND COMMENTS

L. J. Ellis has been engaged to rjde Nedda, in the A.J'.C. Derby. Pbwliiri, seen out at Marlon, is sure to improve with a rac e or two into him. Thp Southland trainer, F. W. Ellis, lias left for Australia, with Gold (‘up and The Graphic. L. J. Ellis has started on his trip to Australia. He will l><* riding at the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting next month. According to sold hern afeports. Sailing Home, flu* brother to Set Sail, is moving attractively in liis work. The Thurnliam gelding Barometer easily accounted for the opposition .opposed to him in tlie chief events on both days at Marton meeting. Lucre was always well placed in the Trial Stakes at: Marton. and taking charge in the straight, won easily.' The soft track suited him.

Yoma, ben years, who is engaged at the Wanganui, meeting, is. reported to bo in fine,, order for his engagements at that fixture.

Pink Coat does not claim an engagement in the Avondale Guineas, but will probably run in the Great Northern Guineas.

Mr A. P. Wilson, chairman of the stipendiary stewards, arrived back tliis week from Sydney, where he has been on a month's holiduy.

It is stated that Hugh Cairns, the well known jockey, who was killed in a hurdle race in Melbourne a few weeks ago, left an estate (running into five figum,

Rapier is credited witli galloping in bold styl e hi Ids' training work at ccai'ton, and the big son of Greyspear will apparently be ready for an early race.

Clockwork, who was taken across to Sydney a few weeks ago, figures in the entries for the hurdle race to be run at the Canterbury Park meeting next Saturday.

Starsliell bad not raced since early lasft season till Wednesday at: Marlon. He was not ready, and is capable of a good deal of improvement.

Gold Cure was tried over a mile and a quarter at Marlon on Wednesday, hut: after- being tJi e pacemaker for a mile petered out at Hie finish.

Reremoana was having his first race at Mart on on Wednesday for some time, when lie contested the Railway Handicap. He was going along nicely in fifth place when the {lost was reached. All A Vera, who finished third in th c . hurdles at MMarton on Wednesday, is a member of A. E. Cox’s Te Aroha team. He should be worth following for the Auckland country circuits. • . Prince Humphrey lmd his first start for several months in th e RailI way Handicap at Martou on Wednesday. He looked nice and fresh, but will need racing more before lie is seen at his best, i Hopwood way made a very warm proposition for tlve Spring Hack at Marton, but.li 0 was well beaten at the finish. lie was well placed all tli 0 way, but failed to go on when the straight was reached. Star Stranger was started in the sprint event at Martou on Wednesday, but the distance proved too short for him. ll e looks well and should b e worth following in future engagements.

Trig, one of G. Reid’s team at Te Aroha, was prominent for a while in the Tutaenui Hack at Marton on Wednesday, but finished outside the money. II C seems to be gifted with pace. Black Duke lifts been responsible for some attractive gallops since be returned to Wingatui from the Grand National meeting, and lie may h e seen to advantage in spring engagements. Hard Gold, who was responsible for u surprise win in lip. decision of tlie hurdle rac e at Marton, is a sixyear old gelding by Gold Soull. He was raced on the flat last season wtliout success. i

The New Zealand four year old Concent rate, who is a fancied candidate for the Metropolitan Handicap, lias almost recovered from the cold he contracted some weeks ago. ‘The gelding is doing nicety in hi s preparation at Randwick, and lie should strip a lit hors c for liis engagement.

• .Semper Pa rat us, a colt by Winning Hit from Equipment, wa s one of tip. disappointments in the juvenile division last season, but the prediction is made that lie will race more attractively this season. Semper Paratu ri is one of Sir George Clifford's team.

Full Fealiter, though missing from tlie early workers at Riecartoii, is still in commission,’ but lie lias been relegated, jn the meantime, to the afternoon contingent. He is training on satisfactorily and he may be seen to advantage before the spring meetings are disposed of. II 0 will make lii s next appearance at tlie Wellington meeting. There are some forgetful people, certainly, who attend race meetings

in South Australia and back winners, for recently a statement was received from Urn Treasury Department, in that part of Australia that during th e last seven years the department had collected the sum of £II,OOO from unclaimed dividends. Gw iters in Durban (S.A.) cannot bo very liberally inclined in the way pC nominating, as recently the Hchlyjcmlowed July Handicap, which lias £OOOO allotted to it only attracted iS3 nominations. In Niew Zealand more than that number is often listed for a hundred pound stake.

Iloariri, who comfortably settled those opposed to him in the Flying Stakes Handicap at Avondale last season, is missing from the list of entrants for the race this .month. Silvermiiie and Kingfield, who secured second and third positions respectively ai’e to be found amongst those paged. The Hastings-trained White Fang is also an entrant. Zetes, th e two year old son of Limond and Waterwings, who holds th e New Zealand record for the highest priced yearling sold, Mr V. Rhl(liforcl having had to expend 2400 guineas to become his owner last January, lias had to he placed on the retired list. It is anticipated that some tim e will elapse ere he will be able to go’ on with his preparation.
