After having a hard race over a mile and a quarter earlier in the day Gay Sonnet's winning perform.nice in the Farewell Handicap at Ashburton was a meritorious one. She Won the same race‘at Ashburton 12 months ago. Beau Geste was one of the early leaders in tP.e Farewell Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, but drifted back after a couple of furlongs had been covered, and finished well behind the placed horses. BoriTO.se created a favourable impression by her decisive win in the EfFelton Hack Handicap at- Ashburton on Saturday, and looks likely to win in better company next season. Miss Niglitraid carried the public confidence in th<_> Trial Plate at Ashburton on Saturday, but drawing an outside marble she was the last to leave the harrier. She si.-owed a lot of speed, and. with a decent start would have landed the stake. Briar Thorn, by Greyspear from Single Rose, made a promising showing in the Longbeach Hack Handicap at Ashburton, and was unlucky to strike Amourette at the top of her form.

Malmsey was withdrawn from the principal event at Ashburton to wait for the Farewell Handicap, but she was run ofT her legs over the eaily part of that race by t-Pe pace l established by Arrowmir. She had not had a- race for some time, and the manner in which she finished on points to hci prospects of gathering some stake money at Wingatui. LEADING SIRES. Sleepy Sol is showing great promise as a. jumper. He clears his fences with plenty of confidence and jumps fast and clean. Sleepy Sol s form has been rather disappointing on the flat, hut lie certainly appeals as one likely to make good as a jumper. The Te Papa trainer, 13. A.
