FOR A STATESMAN r RELIEF SOUGHT FOR THE UNEMPLOYED / (Per Press Association) Blenheim, May 27. - The Hon. AY. A. Veitch, who returned from Kaikoura this evening, whither he had accompanied the. Prime Minister, was accorded a, eivio reception in tho presence of a reproientali'ive gathering of citizens. In responding, the Minister said he liked the portfolio of Labour, because it meant dealing with human [ nature. Its problems wero human problems. In comparison with other parts of the world, New Zealand know no industrial troubles and he appealed to all classes to co-operate in maintaining these conditions of industrial peace. Mr Veitch received a. deputation which stated that 95 unemployed registered at Blenheim in the past few days and requested the Government to expedite public works, such as the £45,000 deviation scliemo for the main south highway between Blenheim ahd Sock!on and the constfucf tion of the South main trunk. They desired preference for local unem- ' ployed until tho men now out of work had been absorbed. The/ Minister undertook to do his «utmost in the matter.
