STRAIN OF THE WAR
FELT BY RETURNED MEN MORE HELP NEEDED (Per Pres s Association) Dunedin, May 27. That there, is as great a need as ever for the work of patriotic societies was strewed by the chairman, Mr J. Clark, of the Otago society, at the annual meeting to-day, the fact being that men discharged apparently fit were, in advancing years, crumpling under the strain. During its existence the society had expended £174,618. The committee had considered the advisability of enfitnahkmg a, certain amount for the future but as each year brought larger claims, it dare not refuse, the needs of to-day for t'ljose of the future, fhe committee had spent large quills oil soldiers in. the North: Island, who seemed to have had, an even, more difficult time than in their home towns. The treasurer reported tTjnt the amount now in hand was £45,706, which was estimated to last at Hie present rate for 121 years.
