There were strange scenes in Piccadilly from, midnight to dawn when 20 fire engines and 130 firemen were fighting a fire in the Trocadeuo restaurant.

The firemen’s uniforms were frozen stiff ami huge, icicles formed n the face of the building.

Seventy loads of water to the mains were- used, to combat the. flames, but the water freezing as it left the hoses fell 0 n the fire as hailstones.

The damage was confined to tin upper storey.
