SCHOOL ATHLETICS

annual sports.

.V UUEAT DAY

On Kouliai Park on Saturday the annual sports gathering of the 1-elid-ing and District Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association was held in perfect weather. Over 1000 children of affiliated schools competed, country schools being well represented. The attendance of adults from the country districts was very good, but townspeople did not give that support which the officers of the Association had a right, to expect. Among the visitors were Mr AN. Collius, Chairman of the Wanganui Educationu Board, -who is patron of the Association. Mr \Y. 11. Swanger. Secretary of tin' Board. Mr A. 'l'. The organisation was ns perfect as anything human can be. Every event —and there was a very large number —was disposed of practically on the second. This was only possible

because the various team of workers had laid out (heir plans beforehand and wer enthusiastic and careful in carrying them out. Also the children competing were ready, eager and obedient—a large credit to their teachers and an honour to their respective schools. II was a privilege to have handled them for the day. This year the Association offered for the first lime a trophy for competition by country schools, for various Hat races for girls and boys. Kopnne school gained the highest number of points, and will hold the trophy for the year. The hoys championship trophy, the Guthrie Shield, was won by Manchester Street school, and the McCorkindale Rose Bowl, for girls events, was also won by Manchester Street. The points for leading schools were: Guthrie Shield — Manchester Street; b2, Kongotea 41, Lydon SI reel. 28. Bunnyl horpe 32. Colytou 11. The President read a telegram from Mr O. A. Banner, now in 'Wellington, first President of the Association. In liis telegram .Air Banner wished the Association a successful sports meeting, and very much regretted ills absence. Very hearty cheers were given for Mr Banner.

Loud cheers were given for the .Secretary to whom the Association owes so much for his wonderful organising ability, his interest and his watchfulness over all departments.
