THE NEW TARIFF

CLEARANCES FROM BOND

RUMOURS A FLOAT

(per Press Association), September 12

A fear that the 1027 tariff revision would react most unfavourably on spirits, beer, tobacco, and cigarettes resulted some weeks ago in substantial withdrawals of these commodities from bond in Auckland. Following the heavy clearance came the statement of the .Minister of 'Finance a lew days ago that in view of the extra revenue being derived this year From income tax it was probable that some relief would bo given through the tariff. The statement had a quietening effect, but the element ol doubt continues. 'The tariff will be announced in Parliament to-morrow. Any increases made will become operative immediami will he in favour of those merchants who .have tucarcd large stocks from; homl to store. Those merchants who are short-stock-ed and have to clear from bond under the higher larill would thus he at, a disadvantage. !l on the other hand reductions are efleeted they will not, on (he Minister’s assurance he made operative at once. To do so would leave those with large stock of cleared goods on their hands in the position of having to lose on their sale the amount ol the tariff reduction .

Obviously the importers lear most an extra impost on whisky, the withdrawals of which from bond have been proportionately very much greater than the Clearances ol anything else in the schedule* Hitherto benzine has not been subject to Customs taxation, hut there is a suspicion in some city circles that it may be made a revenue earner*
