Cold weather and rain threatening was not encouraging for Saturday afternoon’s sport but nevertheless numbers of spectators took a. keen interest in the week-end hockey ■matches which took place at A ietoria Park and at Colvton. I hey were well rewarded, for play of an exceptionally high standard was witnessed and to the followers ot the game there were one or two surprises.

Tlie star game of the day and tho most intereseting and exciting for years past was undoubtedly that between Bcaeonsfiekl and Carnarvon. Beaconsliehl had the lead of one point at half-time and shortly after resuming brought the total to 2-0.

Carnarvon, made a- fine recovery scoring ](> minutes before the final whistle. The match was ’decided a. draw—2 all—when Carnarvon again netted three minutes before time. Clean and open it was a great exposition. The forwards battled /and. neither teams carried passengers. The backs were strong on the defence and quick to turn the tables while the halves were always ready. AlcLe.od and Grice scored for Beaconslieid and F. Florence and AY. Jiles for Carnarvon. Messrs AA'iekham and Herdman very ably refereed.

Stairway again came to light in an. interesting game against Pirates, securing tlie victory by two goals to one. It was not nil a one-sided affair, Pirates battling hard throughout but missing several good openings. Air A 7. Wallis had charge. Hinekoa were in good trim following their success at Taihape, scoring decisively against to strong team from the Carnarvon Club. A sound combination of players the popular yellow and blacks are steendily climbing tliei oempetition ladder. hour goals to one was the score and Messrs Wickham and HerdmaiT bad charge of the field.

High School walked in and out and around, Kia Ora and judging by the score the'odds were all in of school. A strong little team, it stood up to Old Girls the week previous and received a beating by only one point. On Old Girls’ match with Coir ton it shows High School relative strength, at the moment. Air F. Poole confidently made his debut as referee.

Oolvtoii have improved to a marked degree, as indicated by the score in tlie match with Wanderers 2—o in favour of the latter. Well, they can only he wished tlie host oi luck. All. the first-year teams have stood the test well and are making good headway. Mr Stuart had charge. The same might be said ol the Colyton girls.
