COUNTY MAINTENANCE

IN KIWITEA RIDINGS U ' ' ' ! X OVERSEER’S REPORTS. ; At the monthly meeting of. the Kiwitea County Council yesterday the folloAving overseers’ reports on the county work for the month'were presented by Messrs F. Eggers (southern ridings)' and C, Stent (northern ridings). SOTTHERX liTPIXG S. /' Cheltenham Riding. l —The usual surface Avo'rk has received attention throughout tlie riding and several drains have been cleaned out on the Beaconed eld road. ■ TwO old timber culverts' oil Haynes' litie have been replaced with Jlihcli concrete pipes arid a sectihri of the main highway has been trimmed -with the grader. The contract, for widening and metalling a section of Haynes line has been let at a reasonable price. I intend' to replace • several of the old timber culverts with concrete 'pipes,as present ones are beyond repair. Kiwitea Riding.—The main high.wa.v has received attention with the grader. The crninty dump truck is T now delivering maintenance meta'l on the Kimholton road and good progress is being made with the work. 203 cubic yards having licen delivered- to date; Waitrina Riding—The usual surface work throughout the riding has received attention. The roadman has cut the blackberries on the county property at Reiva and is now engaged cleaning out. the drains on the Rangitikei Valley road south. Origo Riding.—The metalling to the new bridge was completed about, three weeks ago. , Apart from this Avoi-k 184 cubic yards of maintenance metal haA’o been carted out on the

roads Avith the No. 8 dump truck. A noAV fence lias been erected at the roadman’s cottage, and the work of painting the •outbuilding and picket fence is iioav in hand and Avill lie completed in a fieiv days’ time. An old culvert filling on Williamson's road cast has been repaired. 1 intend making a start/improving the .southern end of the Parornngi road during the coming week. . Kimholton Riding.—The section of the main highway in this riding has boon trimmed Avith the grader; also Meßeth’s line. Forest junction, and Middle roads. The surfacemen are at present assisting with the metalling work' in the Khvitea riding. Peep O’-Dny Riding. A section of the main highway tq the junction of the Peep-O’-Day-road''. has been trimmed with the grader and is iioav in first-class order. It will he necessary to cart metal as soon as tlie plant is aA r ailable so as to improve the bends which have been . recently widened. Overhanging fern and scrub have been cut hack on the Peep-0-’Day and Bluff roads and water tables cleaned out. On the .western .side of. this, riding the roadman has been engaged trimming, knapping ‘ and blinding 119 AV metal on the Pakiliikura road and AA'ealc places on th Manga pa pa road have also been repaired Avith metal.

General.—'The roads throughout. 1 lie six southern ridings nre in fair order notwithstanding tlie present spell of dry weather. A good rain would he very beneficial !o road surfaces. , Report adopted. NORTHERN RIDINGS. Pakihikuf.T Riding.—The usual maintenance work has been carried out on all roads and a now set of flinch pipes have been put in on Man-, garere road opposite Mr Robb’s, residence. ■ Travelling Slock and the spell, of dry weather are causing the; roads in (he riding to break up and a considerable amount; of clay has been put out this month for blinding purposes. Rangiwahia Riding—The roughest portion of the road in the township has been attended to and big stones picked out. A start has been made 1o give this road a top-dressing with fine gravel/ Approximately 70 cubic yards'* of screened metal from Dcibl's pit: have been carted out for pot; holes and the roughest places on the Main South road between McKean’s corner and Boshier’s. The contractor on the Conspicuous road is making good progress with the metalling work. Hautapu Riding.—The No. 2 lorry has been doing good work in the Upper Ka what an valley and 300 cubic yards of fine river gravel have been carted out between Mrs Cooper’s and Wilson’s Junction. I hope to he able to do more of this work in the autumn on. Ratcliffs hill with line gravel from the river at Potaka bridge. / Several points are being

attended to on the main road lietween Billinghnrst’s and Wilson’s. I hope to lie able to attend to the rough portion on the fiat near the residence of Mrs Fox this month. The light lorry is now carting out metal at Karewarewa for repair work on Alania road. * Report adopted.
