TOUNRNEY CONCLUDED. SWAINSON WINS MEN’S SINGLES. Press Association. Paliiatua, Jan. 5. The .tennis tournament concluded this morning after extending over days. v In the semi-finals of the men’s championship singles, J. 'G. Swainson beat Johnson, G—J, G—2. Welch beat Hooper 4—G, G—*2, G—J. In the final Swainson triumphed over Welch after a stern tussle, 3—6, 6—4, G—2. This was a splendid achievement, by Swainson, who Avon the championship at Pahiatua for the first time 20 years ago. The men’s championship doubles were won by Swainson and Hooper against Welch and Johnson, G—l, G—2.
The handicap doubles were won by W. V. Fisher (Wellington) and FalJoon (Masterton) against W. B. Lowes and R. H. Wardcll.
The ladies’ championship singles were annexed by Miss Hua Gardner (Wellington). In the qualifying round Mrs N. W. Groves displaced her sister, Mrs Potter, by 9—5, Miss
Gardner beat Mrs Booth 9—4, Mrs Groves beat Mrs B. F. Smith 9—G.
In the mixed championship doubles ■in the semi-final Johnson and Mrs Potter beat Hooper and Mrs Smith 9—7. Welch and Mrs Groves beat Mackie and Miss Armistcad. In the
final Welch and Airs Groves beat Johnson and Mrs Potter, 9—6. In the ladies’ handicap doubles Mrs Smith and Miss Gardner-(owe 10) beat Mesdames Potter and Booth (one 15) Go—BO.
