SOME LOCAL NOTES.... •' f (From Our Own Correspondent). - To celebrate their ' "breaking up the school children’s picnic Wits'held out afc Hinau on Mr It. E., Beckett’s property. Being held in such beautiful surroundings there was a good crowd present. Races were hold all day for both grown-ups and children. The prizes were .given during the afternoon and several attendance certificates were also presented. The school children presented their teachdr, Mr A. J. Huston, with an ipk-stand as a. Christmas gift. As usual, Father Christmas visited this town, and the children welcomed him in fancy dress. The evening opened with a short programme, consisting of carols and songs by the school children, pianoforte duet by Audrey Harriss and' Hope Wood, also duct by Ngaire Meads , and Jack Carr. While waiting for Father. Christmas to arrive the children, in fancy dress, marched round the Christmas tree. Some of those in fancy dresses' were: Gwylfa. Robinson, Early Victorian ; Joy Rose,, Hen;.June Harriss, Butterfly; Audrey Harriss, Pierrette; Gwen Moxas, Red Riding Flood; Philip Shaw, Rainbow; Ethel Harper, Roses; Ray Harper. Japanese Lad.v;- Alison McGregor, Fairy; Helen McGregor, Elfin; Halsey Rose. Booster; Bruce Harriss, Pierott; Arnold Robinson,Bunny; Niel Caird, Nigger; Brian McGuinness, Scotch Boy ; Jack MuGuinness, Chinaman. The Christmas tree was laden with gifts and Santa Clause gave something to each child. During the evening a presentation was made Miss Mclntyre, who is leaving the district to learn nursing in the Wellington hospital. Although Misjj Mclntyre has not lived here for some years, she .grew up here and had been a great help in .making up programmes for concerts. Miss Mclntyre wa s presented by Mr Boshier with an ebony toilet set as a token of appreciation of herself. Dancing was kept going until midnight. The Christmas tree committee have-a good sum to send ■ to All Saints Home. The results of competitions were: Box of chocolates to Miss McKenzie and doll to Joyce Ireland.

■ The Tennis Club held a very successful tournament cm Boxing Day. The day was very fine, a fair number of members playing. The ladies’ trophy was won by Miss C. Martin and the men’s trophy by Mr L. Say well. A dance was held in the evening, hut it was not very well patronised. jAisic was supplied by local musicians.

The prolonged dry sped is. becoming rather irksome, as many peope are very, short of water. Still the count l y is looking at its best.
